Who We Are

The Old North Church stands at the north end of Canaan Street as one of New Hampshire’s best-preserved examples of a 19th-century New England meetinghouse. Built in 1828 and shaped by later renovations—including a distinctive 1910 tin interior— the church is a physical link to Canaan’s heritage and a reminder of the values that shaped New England life.

With its original charm intact, the building holds an unmistakable atmosphere that connects visitors to two centuries of local and national history. Two years from the church’s bicentennial, we seek to expand its place in the life of the community, preserve its structural integrity, and secure its financial future.

By an act of the State Legislature, the First Congregational Society of Canaan was incorporated June 20, 1829. The Church was built in 1828 by Bailey Welch, who was paid $100 for his service. The church underwent significant updates in the 1850s and again in 1904, when the tin ceiling and walls were installed. In the 1970s, preservation experts advised keeping the tin interior, recognizing that such later alterations can themselves acquire historic significance.

To conform to the requirements of the State Legislature, the First Congregational Society of Canaan was dissolved and The Old North Church of Canaan, N.H. was incorporated July 16, 1975.

Board members and supporters have suggested new uses that preserve the church’s architecture while increasing its role in the community—such as lectures, art exhibitions, weddings, memorial services, and studio tours. The church’s atmosphere makes it a natural venue for intimate cultural and community gatherings, though the lack of both electricity and plumbing pose challenges in hosting events.

The upcoming 200th anniversary of the Old North Church offers a compelling opportunity to spotlight its history, rally community support, and launch a preservation campaign. This moment calls for creative partnerships and a willingness to imagine new uses that honor the church’s past while securing its future. Whether through collaboration with preservation experts, expanded community programming, or a capital campaign tied to the bicentennial, the Old North Church can continue to stand as a living, active presence in Canaan’s cultural landscape.
